The elongated oval shade curves downward into a narrow cutout that exposes the inner metal and shifts illumination sideways rather than below. Hammered brass gives the shell enough rigidity to hold its shape without flexing when suspended. During daily use, the open section makes bulb changes easy to reach while the exterior resists fingerprints.
Makers in a small workshop form these in short runs, so the hammer spacing and edge line around the opening differ slightly from piece to piece. As the surface ages, recessed marks deepen in tone while raised areas brighten from contact and cleaning, creating contrast that becomes more noticeable over time.
